Open Invitation Drum & Dance Circle
Facilitated by Jason Cave & Gerima

Bring your drums and percussion instruments; all ages; no experience required.  Prepare with FREE drumming, dancing and percussion making workshops

SUNDAY AUGUST 22; 12 NOON - 9pm

THE DAY INCLUDES:

Mainstage Music -- Reggae, Sudanese infused jazz, Traditional African, Calypso, Soca, Jazz, Drumming, Hip Hop, R&B, Gospel, Folk, Dance

Drumming Tent -- Bring your drum and percussion instruments.  Join the jam.  Facilitated by Jason Cave

Steelpan Yard-- with Panwaves, Starlite, and WCI Steelbands. Learn about pan, play a bit and dance a bit.

Visit The History of Steelpan display by Clyde Dookie of Panwaves Steelband.

Children’s Carnival Parade -- Come join the costume parade! Bring your own or borrow one of ours. Visit our mas camp and prepare for the parade in the park.

Races for children -- 3-Legged, Lime & spoon, potato, sack race

Storytelling -- Author Florence Juma

Limbo Contest -- how low can you go?

Workshops

Drumming Workshop by Jason Cave in collaboration with Gerima Harvey Fletcher
Jason Cave
brings over 19 years of drumming experience. (Time TBA)

Drum and play along with Waleed Abdulhamid Kush as he plays the drum and Balimbo.  Visit the artists page for more about Waleed.
Waleed will teach about master rhythms from the Normad, the Sahara, the Ancient Nubia and the Nile. Come enjoy rhythms and songs from the Nile to Timbuktu and the Sahara to the red sea.(Time TBA)

East African Coffee Cermony -- by M & T East African Cuisine (Time TBA)

To Victoria Park (Courtland & David Street Entrance)

From Highway 401 (east or west)

  • Take Exit #278 at Highway 8 West towards Kitchener-Waterloo
  • Follow Highway 8 for five minutes until it becomes (in the far left lane) King Street
  • Take King Street to Downtown Kitchener
  • Turn left at Benton St . (Delta Hotel on corner. Frederick St. on right)
  • Turn right at Courtland Avenue W
  • Cross Queen St. S. and pProceed to Victoria Park entrance at the corner of Courtland and David St.
